You may be wondering what’s up with the fancy pants broom closet redo… I get it. I spent a lot of time and energy getting our creepy dumpster fire of a closet looking spiffy. Here’s the thing. I hate cleaning. Not that actual act of cleaning, I just hate spending my precious weekends cleaning when adventure awaits.

When there’s a task I don’t look forward to, especially a routine task like cleaning, I have a super simple trick that’s highly effective… MAKE YOURSELF SMILE.

If you can create something to get excited about, something that makes you smile, I guarantee you’ll complete the dreaded task quicker and with a bit more joy.

I may detest cleaning, but I LOVE pretty things and tidy spaces. This closet renovation was very simply an effort to make myself smile every time I open the broom closet to retrieve the vacuum and cleaning supplies. And while I may have gone a wee bit overboard with the details (does a broom closet really need a lampshade and hexagon shelves, who’s to say?), the joy that space offers is immeasurable.

Both Ray and I find ourselves peeking in there just to enjoy the tidy polished feel of the space. It’s energized us and sparked conversations about what other spaces really need a facelift.

So, here’s the rundown of what I did and how much it all cost.

1 – Demo existing shelves and baseboard $0

2 – Patch & paint walls & ceiling $30

3 – Paint & install new trim $20

3 – Create new storage shelves $30 (wood, fasteners, & paint)

4 – Create sliding barn door and hardware $25 (most of the cost was wood and paint. I was able to fabricate the hardware using wheels from pulleys, strap metal, and T-Track)

5 – Create custom caddies and labels for cleaning supplies $25

6 – Repurpose lampshade and create wire armature to attach to existing pull cord light fixture $9

Total Cost Of DIY Project: $139

Here’s a short video of some of the details.
